"My Inspiration" Linda Pets FAN-tastic Reviews Contest Fan Corner

We've all been there. You're sitting, listening to Linda sing, when all of a sudden, like a flash of lightning, it hits you… you think, "This song is all about me!"

For THE VOICE Winter 2006 Contest, we asked the fans to write and tell us, "If your life were a Linda song, what would it be and why?" Here are the winning entries!

Bethanny from Illinois says life is all about the "Little Things"...

Linda Eder has worked with a variety of lyricists, but there is one song of hers that makes me feel that I penned it myself. Whenever I listen to "Little Things," I realize that it is the song that accurately describes my true nature and personality. The lyrics, Linda's beautiful voice, and the light musical arrangement complement each other perfectly. If anything about the song were changed, it would no longer be "my own." My favorite type of tune is that which is sung by a female, and is slow, delicate, and comforting.

And it's the peace that I find
When it all slows down
And I feel something in the air
Keeps me from losing my mind
In this crazy world

My favorite place in the world is my home, because it fills me with peace. My husband is wonderful at keeping his own stresses out of the house and out of our marriage, so things just slow down when we're together. My favorite activity in the world is spending time at home with him and our dogs. Whenever I am away for too long (even if it's just a long day at work!), my home calls to me when I am away.

Everyone's always reaching for brass rings
As for me, I'm content with the view
When the afternoon shadows play
With the breezes at end of day
There is nothing I need to say

While I am a hard worker and have many interests, I have realized that I am not an aggressive achiever. I am good at what I do, whether it is studying for a test, playing the saxophone, working at the university, or helping friends and family through difficult times, but I do not desire to make a name for myself in any one field. I would rather enjoy my successes than use them as steps to something higher. I am confident and satisfied with my achievements, and am happy the way I am.

Let the fireworks start
Let the band begin
Those things don't really matter at all
'Cause when the crowds all go home
And I look within
The extravagant gestures seem small
It's not castles and kings
It's the little things

One of the qualities that attracted my husband and I to each other is that we're happy just being ourselves. We don't need to take big vacations, stay in expensive hotels, or eat at the finest restaurants to treat ourselves to something special. We sometimes think that others pay too much attention to those "fireworks," but don't really look within themselves to find their true passions. We are both from Illinois and when we got married, we went to Chicago for our honeymoon. Not Hawaii, not Bora Bora, not Paris. Chicago. In December. We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves more, and that is because we know that the little things, to us, are most important.

Alison from Minnesota believes in the promise of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"...

There is only one Linda Eder song that truly speaks to my life. The song is "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" from Linda's Christmas album. My family has undergone trial after trial in life, but during the holidays, and any time the family is together, everything is always okay. The holidays mark togetherness and cheer despite dealing with death, cancer, heart disease, or any other illness. Whenever I hear the song, I always think about how grateful I am for the family that I have, and that Linda is there to remind me of it.

Gail from New Jersey has found herself saying "I Want More!"...

I guess most of us have a song or two (or more) from Linda's albums that relate to our lives. I know that I have several, but one in particular is very dear to my heart.

After years of continuous debating with myself, I finally made the decision to walk away from a 25-year marriage. Shortly after my decision, all of us as Americans suffered the trauma of 9/11. Then I was lucky enough to hear Linda sing on the Bravo Christmas Concert, and I knew that I was hearing someone very special.

The next day, I bought every CD of Linda's that I could find. One of them was IT'S TIME. On my way to work, I was listening to this CD and "I Want More" came on. What a life changing experience! There I was yelling in my car, "I can't believe it — this is my life!" Thank goodness the car windows were closed or everyone would have thought I was totally insane! Everything that I had ever felt while married was in that wonderful song.

Since there were children involved, I had wasted far too many years trying to make things work and also wondering where my Prince Charming had disappeared. As a mother, I spent the whole time after leaving second-guessing my decision because mothers always want to try and do what's best for their kids. This song made me realize that I deserved more respect, less debating, more listening, and "long-stem roses in a Gucci vase" with "champagne chilling at the door" would have been a very nice touch!

"I Want More" became my theme song. At a concert at Westbury, Linda was looking right at me while performing this song, and I felt as though she was singing this just for me. Most people probably wouldn't believe that a song could cause a "light bulb went off in my head" moment, but this song certainly did. My heartfelt thanks to Jack Murphy for writing such great lyrics and being smart enough to show them to Linda! Thank you Linda for telling Jack not to change a single word!

You never know what life has in store for you. Maybe my next theme song will be "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart!"
